This is a 7/8” blue and white celluloid anti-FDR button connected to the 1940 Wendell Willkie presidential campaign. Refers to a speech made by Wendell Willkie that the people are sick “of the kind of one-man government that calls an Ambassador of the United States ‘my Ambassador.’ It used to be ‘my friends.’ Now it is ‘my Ambassador.’ Pretty soon it will be ‘my generals.’ It certainly is ‘my captain.’ Then it will be ‘my people.’” The Ambassador was Joseph Kennedy, Ambassador to the Court of St. James – our Ambassador to England at the start of World War II, and generally acknowledged to be a defeatist. This button is in excellent condition and retains its original back paper from the St. Louis Button Co. Listed in Hake as WIL-175. Please email with any questions. Buyer pays reasonable shipping costs (estimated at $3.00 first class, including delivery confirmation). Priority mail and/or insurance extra at buyer’s discretion. Shipping combined on multiple purchases. Thanks for your interest in this item!
