PLEASE ALLOW TIME FOR LARGE PHOTOS TO LOAD Unusual Vintage WALTHAM Mens 1940's Art Deco 21j Watch Here we have a fantastic gents Waltham watch which is in very nice condition throughout and which was produced some time between 1942-1947. The watch is fully working on the original movement which is keeping good time. It comes complete with leather band and is ready to wear. It is signed by Waltham on the Case, Dial and Movement. The Waltham signed case is a beauty and has a great sweeping design to it. It is a rectangular model with dipped sweeping sides which rise towards the ends. The sides also have a fluted design which continues on through the sweeping lugs. The angle on the ends also has a dipped curve. The whole case, including the back is a rich 10 karat gold fill. It shows very little rub at all, just a tiny point to the tips. The inside of the back is fully signed by Waltham including case number and other details. The case measures approximately 35mm x 23mm. The Waltham dial on this is silver with a black outer minute track and a set of black outlined shiny gold leaf style numbers and squares at the hour positions. It has a sub second dial at the 6 position which is rectangular and has its own black markers. The Waltham signature sits below the 12 position. It shows up extremely well with maybe just a light age hue and a couple of tiny specks. The index style hands are also gold. The glass crystal is slightly domed and also in very good condition. The watch is fully working on the original Waltham signed 870 Calibre 21j movement and it is keeping good time. These vintage models are becoming much sought after and very rare so it's not something you see in everyday life making it something very special and unusual to give and receive. Extensive WALTHAM History In 1850, Roxbury, Massachusetts, David Davis, Edward Howard and Aaron Lufki Dennison formed together the company that would later become the American Waltham Watch Company . The revolutionary business plan was to manufacture the movement parts so precisely that they would become fully interchangeable. The company was renamed "Boston Watch Company" in September 1853. A new factory was built in Waltham, Massachusetts, on the banks of the Charles River, which grew over the years to its present size. In October 1854 the company moved into the new factory. The next movements manufactured (1001-5000) were marked "Dennison, Howard, & Davis", "P.S.Bartlett", and "C.T. Parker". The company had financial difficulties and Edward Howard left to form E. Howard & Co. Upon bankruptcy, the company was sold at auction to Royal E. Robbins, who reorganised it under the new name "Appleton Tracy & Co" in May 1857. Bearing this name, the next movements produced, Waltham Model 1857, were numbered 5001 to 14,000. Also the "C.T. Parker" was introduced as 1857 model: 399 units were made. Also 598 chronometers were manufactured. January 1853 saw the introduction of the P.S. Bartlett watch. The "Waltham Improvement Co." merged in January 1859 with the "Appleton, Tracy & Co." forming the American Waltham Watch Company (AWWCo). In 1860, as President Abraham Lincoln was elected, the country was in Civil War. Production ground to a halt. However, the company decided to downsize to the lowest possible level to keep the factory open. It worked: Upon his Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln became the proud owner of a Waltham watch: Model 1857, Grade Wm Ellery, serial number no 67613. Waltham became the main supplier of Railroad chronometers to the various railroads in North America and in as many as 52 other countries of the world. In 1876, Waltham disclosed the first automatic screw making machinery and obtained the first Gold Medal in a watch precision contest at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.
