DeMolay was founded in Kansas City, Missouri in 1919. It is an international fraternal organization for young men between the ages of 12 and 21. It was named after Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar. The Degree of Chevalier is the second highest honor for distinguished DeMolay service awarded by the International Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay. Only one other honor, the Legion of Honor Degree for outstanding leadership and service to humanity, exceeds the Degree of Chevalier. However, the Degree of Chevalier is the highest honor that is given to an active DeMolay member. The Degree of Chevalier was created in 1920, briefly discontinued, then reintroduced in 1936. In 1947, when this medallion was awarded, the minimum age to receive the Degree of Chevalier was eighteen. The Degree of Chevalier is awarded by the International Supreme Council of DeMolay at its annual Sessions. Nominees are submitted by the Advisory Council of a DeMolay Chapter or of a Knighthood Priory, or by a Court of Chevaliers to the Executive Officer of the Jurisdiction (state). Each active member of the International Supreme Council has the right to make no more than one personal nomination every year. The Degree of Chevalier isn't applied for, and the nomination is made without the knowledge of the DeMolay member who is nominated. read more
