Burton Collection of Letters from FezOriginal Envelopes with Pre-Independence Postage Stamps 1948 Collection of letters and envelopes from the personal archive of a celebrated young French author named Geneviève Duhamelet. Includes Two Signed Manuscript Letters and One Letter in Typescript, from a French lawyer in Fez, as well as Two Leafs in Manuscript of Reflections, written by A. Duhamelet, evidently a family member, one of which bears a lovely sketch drawing. 8vo. Altogether 5 leafs. All text is in French. Also with the three original postally used envelopes, each bearing beautiful stamps from Morocco, each postmarked 1948. Some chips and creasing to envelopes, otherwise in very good condition. The letters are written by Henri Larrouy, a lawyer residing in Fez, and addressed to a Miss Geneviève Duhamelet, an author who lives at 4 rue Jean-Bart, Paris. Little information is found about Larrouy, except that he practiced law in Fez at least until 1957. A compassionate and spiritual man, he interjects his praise for her written work, with his most personal philosophies of spiritual and physical well-being. Accompanied by the original envelopes, with beautiful and bright pre-Independence French-Arabic postage stamps from Marocco. One stamp in pristine condition - unaffected by post office markings. One is postmark stamped 18 June 1948; two are dated 7 July 1948. The two leafs of reflections are written by A. Duhamelet, and unrelated in content. A striking sketch drawing illustrates his/her research the origin some birds' names. The second leaf continues from a leaf not present here, but forms a captivating relation of a most dramatic episode, that of the French fourteenth century hero 'Grand Ferré' Both leafs are in a meticulous and delicate hand, written verso and recto, and very legible. The first Moroccan postal stamps were produced in 1891 by companies which managed correspondence between two cities. The system was replaced after a reorganization in the end of 1911. Morocco started producing two series of postal stamps which served the whole of Morocco until 1915 and Tangier until 1919. Since 1891, the French post offices in Morocco emptied the folds which were entrusted to them with French stamps by over-charging them of their value in Spanish currency. Then, with the first years of French protectorate, as for the other French colonies, stamps bearing the name "MAROC" were produced in Arabic. Tangier, as an international zone, had a French office which used the stamps of French Morocco labeled with the name of the city. After the independence in 1956, the kingdom of Morocco regained its postal autonomy. Series of everyday usage were printed with the effigy of the sovereign king of Morocco. Fes or Fez is the second largest city of Morocco after Casablanca. Geneviève Duhamelet (1890-1980) is a female writer, a young Catholic from Paris. She was a teacher and also served as a nurse for the Red Cross. At a young age she gained well deserved recognition for her writing as well, gaining her reputation from her many novels, short stories, and plays for children. She published biographies and volumes of poems also, enjoying much success from "Pour l'amour de l'amour" which won the Jacques Normand prize in 1923. "Rue de chien qui pêche" (1924) was crowned by the French Academy and by the Academy de l'Humeur Français.
