A superb 1/43rd scale resin model from FernandoPinto’s excellent Bizarre range of the 300hp 8001 turbine-engined prototype completed by FIAT in January 1953 and tested around the Lingotto factory rooftop test track on April 14th 1954. Wind tunnel tests showed the drag coefficient to be just 0.14 and the estimated maximum speed to be in the region of 160 mph. In a proposed attempt to break the British Rover turbine's speed record of 152.9 mph achieved in 1952, the car was prepared in September 1956 for an attempt over the flying kilometer. Part way through preparation however, Frenchman Jean Hebert set a new turbine-powered record at 191.8 mph in Renault's Etoile Filante on Bonneville Salt Flats Utah which put the record out of FIAT's grasp. The car did however hold the record for the lowest drag coefficient on an automobile for 30 years. It now rests in Fiat's collection at the Automobile Museum in Turin and is occasionally loaned to exhibitions See otherlisted items for more speed record related models and memorabilia being be added on a regular basis.
