RARE: Significant Achievements in Space Sciences 1958-1964 Ten Volume Set Space Astronomy ( SP-91) Space Bioscience (SP-92) Space Communications & Navigation ( SP-93) Satellite Geodesy (SP-94) Ionospheres and Radio Physics (SP-95) Satellite Meteorology (SP-96) Particles and Fields (SP-97) Planetary Atmospheres (SP-98) Planetology (SP-99) Solar Physics (SP-100) Description Space Astronomy (SP-91) This rare volume chronicles the first seven years of the space age, a time of truly historic exploration in space astronomy. Topics covered include ground-based, rocket-based, balloon-based, and and satellite-based exploration of the universe in various wavelengths. Of particular interest is the discussion of a 1964 Aerobee rocket carrying a Geiger counters that pointed at the Moon during a critical 5-minute p phase in which the Moon was occulting the central portion of the Crab Nebula. The data resulting from the complicated and high-flying mission was compromised somewhat by very mundane concerns - continuous rains had caused increase moisture sufficient to distort the instruments' results. A variety of astronomical explorations are presented here (including the Stratoscope II 36" observatory, which flew on a balloon to 80,000 feet) and each one is a testament to the technology of the day. This rare volume is a glimpse in to the early
