Topics covered include ground-based, rocket-based, balloon-based, and and satellite-based exploration of the universe in various wavelengths. Of particular interest is the discussion of a 1964 Aerobee rocket carrying a Geiger counters that pointed at the Moon during a critical 5-minute p phase in which the Moon was occulting the central portion of the Crab Nebula. The data resulting from the complicated and high-flying mission was compromised somewhat by very mundane concerns - continuous rains had caused increase moisture sufficient to distort the instruments' results. A variety of astronomical explorations are presented here (including the Stratoscope II 36" observatory, which flew on a balloon to 80,000 feet) and each one is a testament to the technology of the day. This rare volume is a glimpse in to the early read more
