Great international hockey rivalry at its best! 1978 World Hockey Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Gold medal game between Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia, May 14, 1978 Earlier that season, in December 1977 during Izvestia Cup (which was known as "mini World Championship"), the reigning World Champion, team Czechoslovakia absolutely crashed team USSR, winning 8:3. In the first round of 1978 World Championship team Czechoslovakia also won 6:4. In order to get gold medals, Soviets had to win this final game with at least 2 goals difference. Jiri Holecek vs. Vladislav Tretiak, Jiri Bubla vs. Slava Fetisov, Ivan Hlinka vs. Valery Kharlamov... Team USSR roster: Vladislav Tretiak, Slava Fetisov, Vladimir Lutchenko, Vasili Pervukhin, Valeri Vasiliev, Gennadiy Tsygankov, Zinetula Bilyaletdinov, Yuri Fedorov, Sergei Kapustin, Alexander Maltsev, Yuri Lebedev, Boris Mikhailov, Vladimir Petrov, Valeri Kharlamov, Helmut Balderis, Victor Zhluktov, Alexander Golikov, Sergei Makarov (his first tournament with national team), Vladimir Golikov. This was the first year in Soviet national team for the great Russian coach Victor Tikhonov.
