1985 Cayman Islands250th Anniversary of the Royal Land GrantProof Commemorative The Cayman Islands are situated 180 miles north west of Jamaica and are comprised of three islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Discovered by Columbus in 1503 they were named Toptugas (Spanish for turtles) after the large number of turtles found in the nearby coastal waters. There is evidence that the islands were later occupied by British subjects, but it was not until the early 18th century that plans for an official permanent settlement were formulated. On the 9th of May 1735 the first recorded land grant was issued by the Crows in the Cayman Islands. The original letter of patent stated that "30 aces of land shall be allotted to every person, male or female, over 12 years of age residing upon the Island." It also stated that "Children of natural born subjects of England, born in Jamaica would be free citizens of England, having the same privileges as English subject." The Year 1985 marks the 250th Anniversary of the Cayman Islands Royal Land Grant. To commemorate this historic event, the Cayman Islands has commissioned the Royal Mint to strike limited quantities of $250 gold and $5 silver proof legal tender commemorative crown size coins. The obverse of the coins which is common to both denominations features the Raphael Maklouf read more
