This Mandarin fan is elaborately decorated with many views of court life. The figures are dressed in Mandarin costume that is cut from real silk and hand applied and painted with textile designs. The faces are hand painted and applied to the fan. The sticks are wood with gilt lacquer in several shades of gold. The fitted box is also lacquered in gold with a silk hand painted lining. Circa late 19th century. Width Open: 51 cm (20 1/4 in), Guard Stick: 28 cm (11 in) Box: 33 cm (12 3/4 cm) Height: 5.8 cm (2 3/8 in) Condition is good with only two of the applied faces missing. Colors bright. Slight wear to gilt lacquer. The box has slight chipping and a age cracks.
