A wonderful nineteenth century American stoneware jug, New York or New England in origin, with a large folk art bird on a twig design. This piece dates to the 3rd quarter of the 19th C., probably 1860-1870. The bird is very unusual & folky, the cobalt design is bright and vivid. The bird has such detail and stands atop a small twig, with a large number "2" below. This wonderful bird covers a large portion of the front. There is a small chip on the base in the front and a shallow chip on the backside. The rim has some small nicks and a couple tiny chips on the edge, some appear to have been done in the firing. There are no other chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. It measures a large 13 1/4" tall, & 8 3/8" in diameter at the bottom. Stoneware pieces decorated with birds are highly collectible, this piece is no exception with its extremely unusual & rare design. A great piece of folk art and early stoneware, perfect for any collection, and offered with a very modest reserve. This jug is part of several pieces of stoneware I currently have listed from a Connecticut collection (pictured).
