Late 19th - Early 20th C. AYMARA INDIAN PONCHO (Punchu) from Southern Bolivia/Northern Argentina An original hand woven and sewn, of dyed handspun alpaca and sheep wool. This poncho is very finely woven, and the two loom woven sections join across the middlewith hand stitching. This piece has been weel cared for and well constructed, with no significant effects from long utilization. The inside corners are turned in and stitched on one side only, and the circumference bordered, stitched and the material in bands of colors of natural, yellow, grren, blue, and purple as are the 1 3/4 inch bands of color that run paralell on each side. The body color is a varigated salmon, the texture of the colors an artifact of the natural dye and hand spun yarn. The Aymara have existed in the Andes in what is now Western Bolivia, Southern Peru and Northern Chile for over 2,000 years. The region where Tiwanaku and the modern Aymara are located, the Altiplano, was conquered by the Inca. It is most likely that the Inca had a strong influence over the Aymara region for some time. Though conquered by the Inca, the Aymara retained some degree of autonomy under the empire. There were a number of ethnic groups which were later to be called Aymara by the Spanish.
