This coin participates in the pan-European eurostar coin program and honors the Irish artist and author, Jack B. Yeats. Youngest of an unusually artistic family (his brother was the poet William Butler Yeats), Jack Yeats credited his childhood in the Irish countryside, with its light and landscape, for his becoming a painter. His early works were chiefly graphics and illustrations, often published under a pseudonym. After moving into oils, he attempted to capture a rapidly vanishing way of life in Ireland and Celtic mythology - subjects which coincided perfectly with Ireland's struggles to regain independence.
