This auction offers 32 exceptional examples of UNOPENED Indiana Geodes / Nodules. The pictures show the actual specimens you will receive which were collected in Jackson and Lawrence counties of south-central Indiana. This wonderful assortment includes a wide variety of amazing shapes, colors and textures. Please carefully review the pictures to see exactly what you'll receive....a tennis ball is shown in some photos for size reference only, it is not included in the auction. These specimens will fill a medium flat rate box. As you can see, many specimens in this auction are larger than a tennis ball, and I've added a few slightly smaller rocks to fill all the available space in the box. This BOX IS FULL ! The box weighs 28.0 pounds (according to my bathroom scales)! Your mail delivery person will hate you, but you'll love the contents! All these geodes / nodules are offered exactly as found in the field; ALL UNOPENED AND READY TO AMAZE ! What are geodes? According to a 2009 article from the curator of geology at the Indiana State Museum, Indiana geodes originated about 350 million years ago! Along with rocks that were deposited while Indiana was underwater (think of a briny middle-eastern tidal flat--very salty and very shallow). The prevailing theory is that geodes originated as an under-sea floor nodule of the mineral anhydrite. Conditions changed and the anhydrite was replaced, through groundwater flow, by other minerals, resulting in the geodes that we see in only certain rock layers today. By definition, geodes have a hard chalcedony rind, and can either be hollow (with their walls lined by various crystals) or solid. Those crystals are usually quartz or calcite but a recent geological survey reports that Indiana has the highest array of different minerals in their geodes, a higher number than Iowa, Ohio or Kentucky. I have found information that states a geode is simply a rock with a cavity lined with minerals. Cavities are slowly lined with minerals that seep into the cavity dissolved in rain water. If the cavity is completely filled with minerals, it is no longer a geode, but a nodule. It is impossible to determine if these specimens are hollow without cracking them open. Whether a geode or a nodule, they are indeed very unique looking and prized by rockhounds! **IMPORTANT** Care must be taken if you try to crack a geode open, pieces can fly off like shrapnel! Please view one of several youtube videos that show how to crack a geode. Geodes also can explode if you heat them up so don't use them to line your campfire! Most people decorate their flower beds or homes with whole stones, but there are rockhound shops that can help you crack them open if you want to explore inside. Remember there is NO WAY OF KNOWING WHETHER THESE ARE HOLLOW OR SOLID INSIDE . Hollow or solid, these make wonderful gifts that will delight kids of all ages! I accidentally discovered a secret about geodes that I've never read about anywhere. One night I tossed a couple new specimens into my collection tub and in the darkness I noticed sparks! Hmmmm.... I tossed again, and again, and again with the same results nearly every time as a rock tumbled against others. I even tried "rubbing" a couple geodes together in the dark and was astounded by the multitude of sparks I witnessed. With that discovery, I once promised my wife a romantic evening and guaranteed "she would see sparks." I think she was a little disappointed when I started rubbing two rocks together, but she did see sparks!
