3861 Herman Tappan Corning German Cologne trade card sailor boy perfumeHerman Tappan produced this trade card for Sweet Bye & Bye Perfume. It is a superb image and design for a trade card. Also the subject of a sailor is reflective of the Navalist Movement that was very strong in our culture at the time of this card - the 1880’s. By the 1890’s the United States Navy would be one of the 3 strongest in the world, a progression from being about a dozen places lower in the 1870’s.Navy style clothing became popular for children. Advertising images themed after navy references swelled in the 1880’s.NOTE: The scan images tend to be harsher than what is actually there. Paper discoloration and stains show as darker than in real life. White paper in some cases tends to show yellowed. Paper wrinkles tend to be exaggerated. If you have clarification questions, do not hesitate emailing me.Excellent condition w/ reverse having some light age toning. Not distracting. This card likey was in a Victorian album and the light marks are left behind from the glue. All items original to period - No reproductions sold in my store.
