39 Star American Flag 1889 is a 39 star American flag in fair condition. The flag was folded for many years and stored in an old attic, so it has three fold marks. Each fold on the white stripe only does have cracks in the material. The stripes that are red do not have tears or cracks on the folds, only the white ones do. The blue and stars are in very good shape. Corner area of flag as shown does have some separation of the material and some bad areas. I have tried to show as much as I could in the pictures of damaged areas. When laid out flat, damage does not show that much, so mounting of flag in a frame would be best. Material appears to be some kind of silk but no sure. Considering the age of this flag, it's not in too bad of condition. The flag is not brittle, it moves very easily. Size of flag is 12 by 17 inches. Information below was found on Google. When did the U.S. flag have 39 stars?T never was an "official" 39 star U.S. flag. However, flag manufacturers betting on early sales misjudged in 1889 by believing the two Dakotas would be admitted as one state and the others would be delayed until after the 4th of July. Both Dakotas, Montana and Washington were made into states in November, 1889 and Idaho was admitted July 3, 1890! So any 39 star flags in existence were probably made in the fall of 1889 (see below).
