6 Vintage Somayaki (Somaware) 6 oz. Tea Cups You are bidding on 6 Somayaki (Somaware) double-walled 4 oz. teacups, which I bought in Japan in 1969 . They are in excellent condition since I have not used them for many years. They are not chipped, cracked or scratched . They are about 3 1/4 inches high and about the same measurement in diameter. These cups have a "hashiri-uma", or galloping horse motif . It's believed that this motif was requested by a feudal lord in the mid-1600s to show pride in the region's ability to breed and train quality horses. The horse caricature is outlined in gold on the bottom of the inside of each cup. The gold outlined horse in each of these cups is in Excellent condition .Somaware is characterized by the blue-green crackling that covers the surface. These cups are also highlighted with gold trim highlights on the cup's lip edge and around the openings on the outer wall. Somaware is known for its double-walled construction . The inner and outer pieces are thrown separately by the potter and allowed to dry and firm for a short period of time. The inner piece is then joined to the outer piece. This design not only keeps the liquid inside hot, but also the outer surface cool, allowing one to easily hold a cup. I've researched Somaware cups, such as these online and have found that one cup, retail, can sell read more
