T is neither a painting in the mind Nor a mind in the painting: And yet, w else can one find a painting Than in the mind? Avatamsaka Sutra A thangka of the 8 Medicine Buddhas. In this thangka the Medicine Buddha is s hown in the company of seven other Medicine Buddhas, one of whom is Shakyamuni himself. Measures about 18 inches by 27 inches, excluding the outer borders. I'm disappointed that t seems to be so little interest in these thangkas and that people don't seem to realize what treasures they are. T are very few thankgas being painted by Tibetans today, and very few indeed done by 6th and 7th generation Tibetan painters like this one. Read the paragraphs below for information on them. The pencil design drawing for this thangka was done by a 6th generation Tibetan thangka painter!! I am making little or nothing on this painting. It has gotten very hard for the few Tibetan traditional thangka painters left in Nepal to make a living and compete with the Newari and Tamang painters who are wonderful artists but often don't follow the traditional methods. The last two photos show Po-po-la drawing the figures for another thangka. I had the privilege of living with a Tibetan family in Kathmandu for almost 3 months that contained a 6th generation and 7th generation thangka painter. Like every single other thangka done t, whether by students or by the masters - this one was begun by the man I called "Po-po-la" for 3 months, whose real Tibetan name is Thargyal. Before beginning any thangka, he reads the corresponding scriptures about the deities to be portrayed. Then he draws the figures in pencil according to strict geometic proportions written many hundreds of years ago. After that, the painting begins - with colors that have also been described for centuries. Po-po-la is now 76 years old and escaped from Tibet in 1962, shortly after being released from 3 years imprisonment and torture by the Chinese. He escaped over the border to Nepal close to Mt. Everest and stayed in the Khumbu region for many years, painting for Rinpoches in the area. He went back to Tibet when conditions improved in 1980 and got one of his sons, Wangdi, out. He has painted thangkas for Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Sakya Trizin, and many others. Several noted Western thangka artists have also studied with him for long periods, notably Andy Weber. This thangka is not mounted in brocade and unfortunately I cannot provide that service. Check out my other items ! Don't bother to compare them to the extremely low quality glut of fake "antique" or "old" "Tibetan" thangkas from China that have flooded the market in the last few years. T IS no comparison with these fakes that are as iconographically as incorrect as you can possibly find! I haven't seen a genuine antique Tibetan thangka on ebay in MANY years. Not only has China 's brutal regime been systematically eliminating Tibet 's culture and religion in Tibet , they are ruining the art of thangka painting w it is barely hanging on in exile in Nepal and India .
