Senufo Hornbill Figure - Cote d' Ivoire Hornbill figures, called Setien or Porpianong, were used by the Lo and Poro societies. A symbol of fertility and the original ancestor cult, the hornbill was the mythological founder of the Senufo people. The figures were originally worn on the head during long dances and processions. The Setien, hermaphrodictic, represent procreation, with their long hooked beaks touching their protruding stomachs that they have fertilized, tfore being the carrier of life and a symbol of continuity to future generations. Hornbills are noble birds; they mate for life, they share equally in the raising of their young who they protect by spreading their wings. They are depicted in their erect, protective stance. This particular figure, beautifully adorned with brass plates, red cloth & cowrie shells, is in very condition & is neither new nor a replica. Dimensions : +-7.9 inches wide, 20.5 inches long. Weight : +- 2.33 kg (5.14 lbs). Shipping: I always ship Airmail - so the price quoted on the auction is for AIRMAIL. Airmail costs more than surface mail as items arrive very quickly by air (10-15 working days). Prices are based on shipping from South Africa (w I'm based, via the Post Office) to the rest of the world. If the shipping price is a real problem for you, a way of bringing it down is to ship via surface mail (sea); however, it can take up to 3 months to arrive. After comparing & searching all over SOUTH AFRICA for the most reasonable shipping prices, the Post Office has proven to be both reasonably priced & very realiable. They also offer tracking numbers which is useful for finding out w in the world a parcel is! T are 2 types of shipping available: Airmail (Air): This is the standard and most reliable method as items get t quickly, +-10 - 15 working days. Surface Mail (Sea): This method is much cheaper, but items can take up to 3 months to arrive, and fragile items have a higher risk of being damaged in transit. The Post Office charges a rate based on the WEIGHT and volume of a parcel. Shipping Discounts: I offer shipping discounts on mulitple items as I can then deduct the cost of the extra packaging material as shipping is calculated on the weight of the parcel. Each combined shipping discount is individually calculated, ie. Depending on the individual items bought & the size & weight of the boxes that would have been used, those weights are deducted and a discount for that particular parcel of items is passed on to the customer. Note: If a shipping price seems high, please check the WEIGHT of the item. An item over 1 kg (2.2 pounds) & up is heavy & tfore going to cost a lot more. This applies mainly to Airmail, so surface mail is an ideal alternative for heavy items, so long as you can wait & the item is not fragile. I try to keep my item prices as low as possible, so if you COMBINE the price of the item with the shipping price - you will find that my prices are still highly competitive .
