Characteristics of Baule masks oftencombine animal and human figures and sometimes both. Human masks are crafted and used only by men to make contact with Gu, ruler of the world. The holes on the sides of the mask help attach the mask to the face of the wearer. Baule masks are all unique, however all have similar qualities. The primary important qualities of the Baule masks are smoothed patina, balanced proportions, clear lines and well rounded and slightly asymmetrical in form. This mask measures 21" in height and 11" in width with a thickness of 5". The goli kplekple mask is one of several that appear in the Goli spirit dance. It represents a minor spirit associated with the junior rank of male dancers who perform before the more important masks appear. In keeping with its status this mask is made in a simple disk like design. Considered a mischievous mask, the youthful dancers playfully chase young women around the village goaded by their songs.
