Beautiful Agarwood 12 - 18mm Bead Mala Bracelet weighing 50 grams strung on strong elastic cord Plus A silk brocade drawstring bag to hold this sacred piece. Bag is approximately 4" wide x 4" high There are Twelve 18mm beads in this bracelet mala. Our Photos In order to give you the best ability to see what each mala looks like, I photograph first one side on the silk bag and then I flip it over along with the silk bag, so you can see the other side of both the mala and the bag. I hope this helps you identify how each bead changes from front to back. Every bead is different. I also photograph the mala with a bit of the bag showing, so you can see how much it weighs. Please note this weight includes the cord that the beads are strung on. Agarwood is also known as aloeswood, ginko, jinko, aguilawood, eaglewood, kyara, gharu, ghara. It has the aromatic fragrance of Agar or 'Oodh', a highly prized spiritual scent that has been used in the Tibetan Lamaseries for centuries. Our Indonesian Malas The wood in this mala comes from Indonesia. It is harvested from the species, aquilaria malaccensis aetoxylon sympetalum found in the Borneo jungle forest.. After learning about Agarwood, I searched for someone who makes these precious objects and found a husband and wife who are dedicated to this work. They live in Indonesia. The man goes into the jungle to examine and buy the wood that they make each bead from. Each piece of wood is inspected for its weight, color, beauty and fragrance. The heavier the wood, the more resin it contains, and thus the more fragrant. You will find the malas we carry are beautiful. All made by loving hands in a small family setting. The different species of agarwood have different values. The rarest and most expensive is called, Keenam, which comes from Vietnam. Our malas are "B" Grade, more of an entry level price, but you will find them beautiful and lightly fragrant. What is Agarwood Agarwood, also called, oodh or agar ) is a dark resinous heartwood that forms in Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees (large evergreens native to southeast Asia ) when they become infected with a type of mold. Prior to infection, the heartwood is relatively light and pale colored; however, as the infection progresses, the tree produces a dark aromatic resin in response to the attack, which results in a very dense, dark, resin embedded heartwood. The resin embedded wood is commonly called gaharu , jinko , aloeswood , agarwood , or oud (not to be confused with ' Bakhoor ') and is valued in many cultures for its distinctive fragrance, and thus is used for incense and perfumes . One of the reasons for the relative rarity and high cost of agarwood is the depletion of the wild resource. Since 1995 Aquilaria malaccensis , the primary source, has been listed in Appendix II (potentially threatened species) by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora . In 2004 all Aquilaria species were listed in Appendix II; however, a number of countries have outstanding reservations regarding that listing. History The odour of agarwood is complex and pleasing, with few or no similar natural analogues. As a result, agarwood and its essential oil gained great cultural and religious significance in ancient civilizations around the world, being mentioned throughout one of the world's oldest written texts – the Sanskrit Vedas from India. As early as the third century AD in ancient China, the chronicle Nan zhou yi wu zhi (Strange things from the South) written by Wa Zhen of the Eastern Wu Dynasty mentioned agarwood produced in the Rinan commandery, now Central Vietnam , and how people collected it in the mountains.
