Philmont Fund-raiser Several items have been donated to our Scout Troop and are being sold to raise funds to support our transportation costs of sending a group of Scouts to Philmont Scout Ranch in July 2013. Think road trip for 3 1/2 days each way..... If funds are raised beyond those needed for transportation, then scholarship assistance will be offered to help other Troop members join our Philmont group. This item is one of those donated. The net proceeds from the winning bid will go to the Troop for our fund-raising efforts. The ebay and paypal seller's fees will be subtracted from the winning bid, before funds are passed on to the Troop. Once I hear from the winning bidder that the item has arrived safely and they are satisfied, the net amount from the winning bid will be turned over to the Troop. Please look for more of my listings that have PFR or Philmont Fund-raiser in the title, for more of these donated items. The item offered in this auction is a vintage HO Scale 4-6-4 locomotive. This is a AKANE Hudson, produced in the 1950's I believe. It is painted and lettered for the Santa Fe as AT&SF # 3462. There is weathering liberally applied on the entire engine. The roadnumber 3462 appears to actually be etched on the front and side number boards, as well as on the sides of the tender. There is an small circular AKANE builder plate on both sides of the smokebox. The engine is of brass and cast construction. The locomotive main frame appears to be cast as do the rear truck side frames and tender truck sideframes, which look rather crude. The smokestack has an interesting hinged feature, though at present it wants to be left open and won't close past the vertical position. Note that there are two pipes, not one, running forward along the top of the boiler, from the front of the cab to the small dome. The engine alone weighs just under one pound, 3 ounces... The tender alone weighs 9 ounces. There is no coupler mounted on the tender or evidence of one. There is no sign a front coupler has ever been mounted on the engine. The insulating fiber drawbar between the engine and tender is broken. I have put 12 vdc power to the 2 electrical leads off the back of the engine, but only got the smallest movement and a motor hum. The drivers do all have a bit of play, so the axles are not bound up. I suspect that the motor lube is all stiff from being stored over 3 decades. I see no sign of how either lead wire would attach to the tender frame. The insulation on the lead wires is plastic. The tender, lead and trailing truck wheels all turn freely. All wheels or driver tires appear have early, non RP25 flanges. The oil type tender is not marked. There is a open hole in the forward face of the tender, where it looks like a part is missing. The tender rides on 6 wheel trucks. The cast truck sideframes are attached to brass sheet truck bolsters with 2 screws per sideframe. There is a long straight shaft attached at both of the front corners of the tender, pointing down towards the rails. Both of these shafts are bent at least slightly. The engine is part of a collection that was stored decades ago (possibly since about 1975) and has been donated by a member of the estate. There is no box. I am not familiar with brass engines and am not comfortable with digging deeper into the very nice mechanism to investigate further on something that is not mine. I suspect that the engine is from the 1950's or very early 1960's. The engine will be sold in as - is condition, I do not consider it operational in it's present state. Please look carefully at the photos and bid accordingly. The engine has not been track tested. The piece of track is not included. The engine is dusty, from sitting around before being packed away decades ago. If you are looking for an engine to take out of the package and run nicely, this is not it.
