Up for auction is this heavy #650 Japanese Planter. Truthfully, I can't say for sure if this is an Akro or Westite piece as it doesn't have any markings. Kind of a similiar situation to the #651 Oval Scalloped Top Graduated Dart Planter , with or without darts. As Yoggi would say, it is what it is. It's approximately 11 1/4" long, 6 3/4" wide and 3 1/4" high with 2 double dogged legged feet as shown in the pictures. It weighs a little over 3 lbs. 6 oz. so it's a pretty hefty chunk 'o glass, for sure. The pale lime green color has a sort of halo effect in areas, that's similiar to the effect you'll see in some of Akro's cobalt / Royal Blue items. It's been used but is in remarkable shape, with no chips, cracks or dings. Even the 3/4" top edge has made it this far unblemished. The only wear spots, indicating it's usage are on the ends and corners of the "feet" and are really just 1/4" dull areas on the glass w it sat on a table or shelf. Nice piece of glass. Roger and Claudia Hardy, in their book The Complete Line of the Akro Agate Co., relate the story of Anna Oliverio, who worked at Akro Agate, telling them she nicknamed them "The Miracle Bowl" because too much glass was required to make them and as they were coming down the line, they ran into each other, causing them to chip and break. Apparantly, not too many were made.
