I think it was probably made for a Chocolate set. It is a child's size. The cup measures 2 1/2" across and 1 3/8" deep; and the saucer is just 4" in diameter. The underside of saucer is marked: Alhambra AUSTRIA. The cup is marked only AUSTRIA. (Alhambra was a pattern that came out of Vienna Austria in the early 20th century. The pattern is in gold with bold burgandy red and deep green geometric shapes. It dates to the period after 1900 and possibly into the 1930s. I am not clear on maker. It seems the line was made my more than one factory/maker. Condition: Pieces are without chips or cracks. T is a little bit of minor wear on hand painted gold vine leaves on inside of cup. Also a little bit of wear on gold trim line on edge of saucer. Otherwise no color wear, marks or scratches! It is a beautiful little C&S set! Might be nice find for collectors of children's dishes or demitasse size cups and saucers! (From my research I discovered that during the Victorian era, it was customary to serve children hot chocolate in fancy china sets. Collecting the cups from these sets has become popular too.
