World War IAmerican North Russian Expeditionary Force Cherry Wood Souvenir TrayThe Polar Bear Expedition (about 5,000 American soldiers who called themselves "Polar Bears" and were authorized to wear the Polar Bear insignia) fought in Arkhangelsk, Russia as part of the Allied intervention fighting the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. The soldiers were sent to Russia by President Woodrow Wilson. The campaign was not termed successful and the ANREF was officially disbanded on August 5, 1919. 56 ANREF soldiers were buried in plots surrounding the Polar Bear Monument by sculptor Leon Hermant in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Michigan.
