Item Description: For sale is this classic set of authentic set of early Edo period Japanese samurai armour made in the hon iyozane maru-dou gusoku style. This style of armour was unique to the samurai of the renowned Hosokawa , many of its features having been developed under the direct patronage of one the clans ruling dynastic families lords during the later part of the 16th century. I have noted t is another armour being offered on eBay at the moment that is claimed to be a Hosokawa clan armour. Unfortunately it is not and has none of the key features necessary to be accredited to and or qualify as being of the later clans style. The most obvious of several key features that is incorrect is a true Hosokawa clan armour must feature a kabuto bachi or helmet bowl that is made in the Etchu style of zunari bachi . Though a variety of zunari the Etchu version is unique in that the long central plate OVERLAPS the BROW/VISOR plate. In the case of the armour being offered you can immediately note this is not the case. The next key point is that virtually all Hosokawa armours feature hanpo, or open facial armour and not me-no-shita half masks. Hosokawa armours will in their true form not feature sode and the dou will be fabricated from iyozane scale in almost all cases. The armour being described as Hosokawa is actually of Kaga manufacture and is not related. It is worth noting that the owner failed to mentioned the eri-mashi brigandine collar and kobire are both modern made items produced by Marutake for their reproduction armours. A final main feature require to be Hosokawa armour is the sangu articles including the kote, haidte and suenate should be of the Etchu variety. I'm going to include some sections from by upcoming book, " The Concise Glossary of Japanese Armour Manufacture, Parts & Terminology ", below for more detail on the Etchu variety of armour. Also please refer to the two example images of Hosokawa armours for a comparison. Note that Hosokawa armour are almost alwasy very subdued, being almost entirely black in or dark in overall colouration. The armour I am offering will fit precisely with all of the below information. The other armour on eBay right now that is said to be Hosokawa you will note is completely incorrect in ever aspect. I believe the seller made a mistake on thinking this was Hosokawa armour based on the small crests on the fukigaeshi of the kabuto which was one of the kamon used by the Hosokawa, but crest alone, as I have said many times before cannot be used to determine the original of an armour. For example the same crest was used by the Soma clan and several others. But only the Hosokawa clan used the Etchu variety of armour to the exclusively degree that they did. Unlike the other armour mentioned above this armour set represents one true gusoku , or an armour grouping comprised entirely of its original and matched component parts. Being a true gusoku and not a composite armour makes a big difference to the value of these historical sets. Many people are unaware of the fact that the vast majority of armour sets seen for sale are in fact composite groupings, or basically sets complied from any number of miscellaneous pieces to make what appears to be one complete armour. We ourselves of course list composite sets, as again they are by far the most commonly available and also are the sets that generally fall within the budget range of the average collector.
