Double your traffic. This is a handsome miniature ox bone fretwork basket filled with 16 carved ox bone fish game counters. Fish-shaped game counters were imported from China in the 18th century and used in card games like whist or loo. Many later ended up in sewing baskets as thread winders. The basket is also an early Chinese import and is remarkable in that it has no chips or cracks. It measures 2 1/2" tall and is 2" diameter. The fish counters measure from 2" to 1 3/4" long. All but three are stained red. One has a chipped tail and there is uneven wear to the red stain.
