In the fall of 1862, the Confederacy’s successful advance on Kentucky threatened the southern Ohio border of Cincinnati. Ohio Governor David Tod called to action any available men from across the state, over 15,000 farmers and work men descended on the city ready for service armed with their own weapons. The Confederacy retreated and Cincinnati never saw battle, but the men who swore to defend it with no military training were hence known as the Squirrel Hunters and issued these discharges with the state’s gratitude in 1863.Fantastic lithography by Ehrgot & Farbiger. Certificate measures 8.5 x 10.5”, with toning and foxing. Many small edge tears; substantial tears to bottom left corner and bottom center. All appear to have been stabilized with archival tape, but would benefit from professional cleaning and treatment. Scarce and worthy of the expense. Please see photos and email with questions. Thanks much for looking.
