Listing 2 authentic documents and a newspaper clipping dated 1919. The first is "The Squirrel Hunters" Discharge Paper. Approved by David Tod, Governor. Cincinnati was menaced by the enemies of our Union. David Tod, Governor of Ohio called on the Minute Men of the state and the Squirrel Hunters came by the thousands to the rescue. You J. C. Ward were one of them and this is your honorable discharge. September 1862. Paper has been folded and taped long ago (see photos). It is fragile with a seam that has separated. The 2nd document is also an original dated March 4th, 1863 by the State of Ohio Executive Department in Columbus. Also directed to the name of J. C. Ward in ink. Appears to be an ink signature of the Governor as well, David Tod at the base. This is stated as a certificate of your service as a Squirrel Hunter rendered in September last, Ohio our dear state would have been invaded by a band of pirates determined to overthrow the best government on earth, our wives and children would have been violated and murdered and our homes plundered and sacked......and the document continues...Invoking God's choicest blessings upon yourself and all who are dear to you. I am very truly yours...David Tod. This paper has been folded twice with the folds separated in both places. Natural wear & tear with age. More pictures added upon request. read more
