13" High x 6 1/2" Wide 6 1/4" ExtensionThough referenced in "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" as being from the mid to late 18th century , we feel this example dates into the 19th century in its construction of the wooden frame.Lanterns like this were a common form in early America as they were a practical design. Enclosing the sides in four sheets of glass allowed the candle to burn freely as one moved about with no worries of their movement or any breeze extingusing the flame. As you can see the top of the piece has a formed in circular hole, vital for free oxygen exchange and of course as to not burn the top portion of the lantern. From general use the sheets of glass would often break and need to be replaced, another element of the design is the simple nature of one being able to replace them with the ease of sliding the sheets into place through the grooved construction.A great apperance and condition on this classic American candle lantern offered for a period of one week with no reserve. Thanks for visiting The Country Tin! supreme supremewidgets supremeauctiononlinesoftware.widgets.FeedbackWidgetBasicFree.swf supremewidgets supremeauctiononlinesoftware.widgets.GalleryBasicFree.swf Double your traffic.
