Stunning and beautiful early 1800's English brown transferware platter. English printed and impressed marks date to 1840-1850. This handsome platter is 12 1/4" x 15 3/4". Pattern name, Parisian , is printed on reverse as part of the mark. This platter displays quite a RARE find, the name of the importer/merchant seller, N G Bassett, is printed as part of the mark. Premier merchants were lucky enough to order their wares with their own logo on the back. So we know this platter was sold in one of the finest shops of the time. Nothing quite represents the English style like antique brown transferware. Quite rare, as compared to red and blue transferware. Perfect to decorate with in so many situations due to its neutral color. These older transfer patterns were ment to show that people were very worldly and well traveled with their Asian, Chinese and Ottoman scenic transfer patterns. This platter is no exception with its Middle Eastern/Ottoman scenic central transfer medallion. A lovely floral border complements the elongated octagonal shape of this platter. Platter is of heavy English Ironstone. No chips, cracks, or repairs, just the expected very fine age crazing. Some of the ironstone color shows through accenting the age crazing. T his platter is in near MINT condition, quite rare for a nearly 160 year-old piece. Overall the platter read more
