Fine Antique c1700 Edo Japanese Arita Deshima European Subject Porcelain Plate Description Fine Antique c1700 Edo Japanese Arita Deshima European Subject Porcelain Plate. Underglaze blue 'Deshima' pattern plate. Deshima was the port were the Dutch had access to Japan in the 17thC. It was believed this design was of that port. This design can also be found on contemporary Chinese porcelain, some were found on the Ca Mau shipwreck dating 1723-35. A closer look however reveals that the buildings in the background are distinctly European. The origin of this pattern lies more likely in a Dutch Delft design, possibly Scheveningen harbor in Holland (this pattern is also called 'Scheveningen pattern' in Dutch). Measures approx. 20 cm across and 2.7 cm deep. Date c1680-1720. Condition is very good, some signs of wear and use commensurate with age. A hairline from the rim, four stilt marks on the base.
