Antique Chinese Mah Jong game set in an original fitted case, circa 1900, containing 5 rose wood display racks, and 152 French Ivory or bakelite tiles. French ivory is an early man made material designed to imitate the weight, appearance and texture of elephant ivory. Bakelite is also a type of early man made synthetic material. I am not sure which one is used the the tiles in question. There are two holding trays for the tiles, as well as a pair of red dice. The tiles are beautiful, and hand colored, each measures 1 1/4" x 12/16" x 7/16" or 3 cm x 2.1 cm x 1.2 cm or almost 11 grams in weight. The tiles have a beautiful honey gold patina. The case is original to the game, closes tightly, decorated in a lizard skin pattern. The size of the closed case is 19 1/2" x 8 3/4" x 3". Overall weight is almost 9 pounds! which explains the cost of shipping according to the USPS website.
