DESCRIPTION: We are offering an original Chinese Scroll Painting on paper of a Lady and her Attendant in a landscape, entitled on a paper identification tag; "ex. Plumer Collection", "James C. Nichols Studio", "509 Davis St. Kalamazoo, Mich"; "Title: Lost Lady in Mongolia oil on paper", "Artist: Chinese Scroll". CONDITION POSITIVES: This original Chinese scroll painting on paper is impressive. After more than 100 years the colors are still crisp and vibrant, the beautiful composition and skillful attention to detail is remarkable and visually enchanting. The sheet is flat and relatively free of surface soil and the brushwork is sharp and clearly defined. The warm vintage appearance of the surface enhances the paintings appeal and adds another desirable characteristic to the artwork. CONDITION NEGATIVES: The paper exhibits an expected degree of overall toning from oxidation and exposure and the pigments have faded reasonably over the course of time. The sheet is laid down on heavy pulp board and the margins of the scroll are trimmed. Remnants of silk fabric remain at the four edges and it appears the paper creased and partially cracked at four points making it necessary to lay the picture down on board to prevent further separation. Evidence of an old 1/4" x 1/2" patch repair is seen in the background sky just above the crest of the middle mountain. MANUFACTURER OR PRODUCER: NA ARTIST, AUTHOR, DESIGNER: Signed in the painting, undetermined. COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: China APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS: 26 3/8" x 10 3/4". APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 1 lb. APPROXIMATE AGE: 19th century. IDENTIFYING FEATURES: Artist signature seal upper right. HALLMARKS: NA PROVENANCE OR HISTORY: The painting is from our collection and has been in dry storage for the past ten years. It came to us through a private collector. As previously stated, the evidence of the paper tag leads me to trust the painting was from the collection of the noted University of Michigan Art Historian and Professor, the late James Marshall Plumer (1899-1960). To commemorate Professor Plumer's scholarly contributions to the history and education of Oriental Art, The University of Michigan established "The James M. Plumer Memorial Collection" in his honor. Extensive information is available on the internet. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: The "dust cover" described in "Description:" above, is loose, and it is included in our offering. To protect and save the painting from it's damaged frame it became necessary to remove the painting from the frame. In doing so we had to cut through the paper dust cover on the back of the frame to remove the painting. RESERVE: None.
