Presented here for your bidding inspection is this rare mystery doll--a black cloth minstrel man made in England, the likes of which I can find no other like! This interesting fellow stands 10 3/4" tall and is made from brown felt cloth over what feels like a padded wire armature body. He has a lively hand painted molded mask face with somewhat exaggerated features. The wig appears to be black curly lambs wool. His clothing of felt is sewn on and is very well made, with stitched pleats and applied side stripes on the pants. The jacket has smart brass buttons, with an oilcloth shirt worn underneath. He wears off-white oilcloth gloves and a colorful ribbon bow tie. The feet are weighted to enable him to stand without any further aid. On the bottom of his carefully stitched oilcloth shoes is a paper label on the left sole reading Made in England. The label suggests that he was a factory made doll, but by which company? Or is he a one of a kind doll from a cottage industry or home artist of long ago? At any rate, he's an unusual gentleman from a bygone era, and I don't think you'll find another like him anytime soon.In the last picture I show him with a small item of related interest. It is a miniature book, also from England, on making cloth dolls. A darling golliwogg illustrates the front. This item is not included here but can soon read more
