Firstly let me say that this was the hardest thing I have ever photographed, the shots do not do it justice at all..... Here we have freeblown fly or wasp trap dating from the Victorian era. Free Blown, ie without a mould, by an accomplished glassblower, the three feet and the re-inforcing rim to the lip were added whist the body was still hot and held on the blowpipe. The lip, subsequently exhibiting the roughness where the blowpipe was detached, was then cold ground to remove the sharp edges. Air bubbles and ripples in the glass as well as a faint pinkish tinge attest to the age of this piece. These traps were placed on horizontal surfaces and partially filled with water and some jam or sugar to attract wasps and flies, which once entered the trap can not escape, and eventually drown. They work well and look great. Very enviromentally friendly and VERY shabby chic. Thanks for looking....................... View My Other Items For Sale
