French Opera Glasses. They became fashionable to be seen using, more as an affectation, or to observe the 'goings on' in the neighbouring boxes during a performance rather than as a serious visionary aid. There are suggestions that although nobody in the audience was ever that far enough away from events that they actually needed to employ them, they were undoubtedly used by lecherous male members for the closer voyeuristic appreciation of some of the female performers. Jumelle literally means 'binoculars' / opera glasses and is not a brand as such. Duchesse literally means 'Duchess'. This will give you a flavour of their popularity and usage at the time. This pair is certainly not perfect, if they were they would command a far higher price at Christies. However, I put it to you that they are a fine display piece worthy of any collection, and perhaps with a little piece of history, surrounding a ' vilain monsieur ' ?
