This old violin is labelled: Rigart Rubus. Petersburg 1850 There are also internal labels of two repairers, one reading 'Revisito Viantimiros Filius Nicolai Fecit Scala' the other reading 'Repaired by Noel McCafferty, Strabane, Ireland, 2005'. Richard Rubus (to give him his anglicised name) made violins in St Petersburg, Russia, during the middle of the nineteenth century. They are unusual in having their edges rounded-off giving the outline a very smooth appearance. The space inside the violin is the same as any other one, so the sound is perfectly normal. I have seen several examples over the years. This violin has the appearance of being at least 100 years old so it is either a genuine Rubus or a copy made at about the same time. Its a finely-made violin, so my money would be on it being a real Rigart Rubus. The scroll is carved smoothly and evenly. The pegbox is also good with neat and parallel walls. The pegs are a good ebony set - clearly fitted in recent years, probably by McCafferty. The fingerboard is hard, black, ebony. The violin has a set of good quality strings although I do not know the make. The bridge appears to have been professionally read more
