Unique Hand Painted Shell Brooch Depicts Mongols on Horseback Hunting Deer with Swords and Bows Awesome Piece... very unique and quite detailed! I am a bit befuddled by this brooch... the painting (yes, it is painted and not a transfer) depicts four hunters on horseback. They are dressed in long, belted tunics and wear tight pointed hats. Two of the hunters have bow and arrows and the other two have long curved sabers or swords. T are four running deer painted into the piece as well. The detail of the painting is fabulous. The outlines of the figures and the animals are fine as a hair. I hope my pics show the extreme detail! Now, I thought that was really weird, but I did some research on Mongolia and it turns out to be big on deer hunting. Mongolians have a long history of hunting deer from horseback. Who knew??? Measures 1.5" in diameter. Shell is asymetrical with a humped up place at what would be the top of the brooch. T is also sort of a natural "fold" near the bottom right below a flat dip. The artwork was hand painted and then varnished over. The brooch has a soft sheen to it and one can see the brush strokes of the painting as well as read more
