Antique Hand Painted Shell Brooch Mongolian Deer Hunt LETS HAVE A PLEASANT TRANSACTION! If you PLAN on TAKING LONGER than SEVEN DAYS to PAY or on BEING a PAIN... Please DO NOT BID!!! Unique Hand Painted Shell Brooch Depicts Mongols on Horseback Hunting Deer with Swords and Bows Awesome Piece... very unique and quite detailed! I am a bit befuddled by this brooch... the painting (yes, it is painted and not a transfer) depicts four hunters on horseback. They are dressed in long, belted tunics and wear tight pointed hats. Two of the hunters have bow and arrows and the other two have long curved sabers or swords. T are four running deer painted into the piece as well. The detail of the painting is fabulous. The outlines of the figures and the animals are fine as a hair. I hope my pics show the extreme detail! Now, I thought that was really weird, but I did some research on Mongolia and it turns out to be big on deer hunting. Mongolians have a long history of hunting deer from horseback. Who knew??? Measures 1.5" in diameter. Shell is asymetrical with a humped up place at what would be the top of the brooch. T is also sort of a natural "fold" near the bottom right below a flat dip. The artwork was hand painted and then varnished over. The brooch has a soft sheen to it and one can see the brush strokes of the painting as well as the strokes of the varnish. Another interesting thing about the brooch is that the space between the flat metal back and the back of the shell is filled with super tiny grains of sand. I know some Native American jewelry has sand or sawdust packed behind turquoise or other stones to allow them to "float" so they are less likely to crack. I would assume one might treat a shell the same way. Once in a while a little of this packing sand slips out from around the pool. The mounting has a tiny beaded border that makes a "pool" for the shell to fit into. It looks almost like very thin rope wrapped aroung the outside rim of the back. The clasp is rather primitive but I am sure it is original to the piece. It is solid and in good working order. The yellow looking area on the back must be some leftover residue from a circular label that was once on the brooch. I have included lots of photos of the item. Please look them over carefully.
