VICTORIAN SHELL CAMEO BROOCH OR PENDANT 9ct ROSE GOLD MOUNT Beautiful late nineteenth century shell cameo brooch depicting a classical-style female. Finely carved in high-relief, she could be one of the nymphs accompanying Diana, goddess of the hunt or perhaps a Bacchante - she has a suitably wild look and there appear to be ivy leaves entwined in her hair. The cameo is set in a thick, deep mount which is unmarked but tests as solid 9ct gold. It is all in excellent condition for its age, with only very light signs of use. The mount retains its extra-long gold pin and 'c' clasp, as well as a generous loop at the top. The loop was probably originally intended to hold a safety chain but is perfect for wearing the piece as a pendant if preferred. The mount measures 39mm (slightly over 1 1/2" long by 30mm (1 3/8") wide and over 5mm (3/8") deep and the total weight is 12.08g on my scale.
