This is the largest figural betel nut cutter that I have ever seen. It was used placed on a table, not held in the hand as most betel cutters are, and almost certainly came from a temple. Betel nuts were sometimes used in temple wedding ceremonies when 'pan' would have been offered to ancestors and the gods. An indication of its use in sacred ceremonies is the extensive presence of red puja powder. The metal is brass or bronze with an iron cutter blade. This beautifully decorated figurative cutter (sarota), is in the form of a horse and rider, the horse with back legs extended to form the handle and rear support point, the front legs giving support to the other end. It is in excellent condition with no damage, and comes from Tamil Nadu or possibly Maharashtra. A rare and beautiful piece for the collector or as a special item of decoration.
