A wonderfully carved wood Daruma. The sculptor has utilized the qualities of the bamboo skin in modelling the figure. We usually think of bamboo as having a smooth texture. The sculptor has utilized the top layer with tiny, circular, cell - like structure which alternates with the linear bamboo underneath. Extremely intricate details. The detailing extends from the head to the rest of the statue, accept for the face and part of his folded arms. The face is deeply carved with three linear lines in his forhead with prominent bushy eyebrows. The eyes are deep set with a hole in each. A deep furrow runs along both sides of the nose and extends around the mouth. Below the chin is a beard similar to a short goatee. A small amount of chest is visible, but, is mostly covered by his folded arms hidden by the folds of his robe. His facial features express amazement and disgust at what is going on in the world. A Truly Lovable Daruma! Condition: t is a hairline crack extending up 1/ 1/2" from the base on the backside, and some wood loss(like small shavings) in a few cellular bands. The base is recessed and is the culm membrane. The Daruma measures 8"x 6" x 4", and he is approximately 16" around. Check out my other items !
