Recently obtained at an estate sale in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.This is a Japanese carved wood black lacquered zushi portable shrine. Edo period, 18th century. The cylindrical shrine is hinged and opens into three sections.The outside of the shrine is decorated with intricately carved lotus flowers and Japanese writing.It is 8.5" tall and when opened is 8.5" wide.
