All of its red bronze hardware is original to the piece. It has two locking drawers with key where money and valuables would have been stored by the merchant and a bottom drawer that was used to keep papers and documents. The hinged lid opens to a compartment where the inkstone, inkstick, and brushes would have been kept. The floor of the compartment retains the heavily ink covered wood insert that typically was changed from time to time and looks to be overdue for a changing. The exterior of the boxwas constructed entirely out of Keyaki (Zelkova) wood and the drawer backs were made from Kiri (Paulownia) wood. It has a Urushi lacquer finish and dovetail joinery for strength and durability. There is wear and use marks made by the original ownerand a repaired crack to the hinged lid. The catch for the lid latch was also replaced. Its age is from the 1870's to 1880 (early Meiji era).
