Antique Northwest Coast Indian Whale Dance Rattle Description This is a very old Northwest Coast Indian Dance Rattle. It is a beautifully hand-painted piece depicting a killer whale with a tall dorsal fin from which bundles of animal hair protrude. I've been told the hair simulates the flow of water. It appears to be made of alder wood. The handle of the rattle is bound in fish net cord. The colors are black, red and dark blue. This is truly an amazing piece of hand-crafted art. The item is in great condition and has been on display in a collectors smoke-free home for several years. It measures approximately 13'' long. The head is about 6'' long, 3 1/2'' wide and 7 1/2'' tall including the fin.The piece is unmarked and the exact date is unknown. is some information on Northwest Coast Indian Art: Northwest Coast art is the term commonly applied to a style of art created primarily by artists from Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Kwakwaka'wakw, Nuu-chah-nulth and other First Nations and Native American tribes of the Northwest Coast of North America, from pre-European-contact times up to the present. After European contact, in the late 18th century, the peoples who produced Northwest Coast art suffered huge population losses due to diseases such as smallpox, and cultural losses due to assimilation into European-North American culture. read more
