This item consists of an old pyrographic picture. It has been constructed by using a hot iron on a solid piece of wood. The image size is about twelve inches by sixteen inches. On the back there is an incription stating that artist is SMITH who states that he is a pyrographist and the work is dated 1821. There is also an eye and his address which is 4 Medcalfe Place, Pentonville. All this has been etched on the back by a hot tool. There is a site dedicated to pyrography. It is at /index.html and there are examples of the work of this artist who is Joseph Smith. In fact at the site is an 1823 version of this picture which is called 'KNEELING'. These early pyrographic pictures are rare. This example looks to be in its original maple frame and the total size of the picture with frame is about sixteen inches by twenty inches. Frame and picture are in very good condition with no cracks or splits to the wood panel. This is a rare collector's item. This is a heavy item.
