Antique RUSSIAN Tempera ICON Silverplated & Brass Oklad - 19th Century - MOTHER OF GOD OF HODIGITRIA (She who points the "Way.") with Certificate of Authenticity from Russian Ministry of Culture No Reserve ! AGE : Created circa 1860-1905 ORIGIN: Russia. TECHNIQUE: H andpainted in Tempera on specially primed ("levkas") gesso-covered wooden panel. Silverplated, chased, hand-engraved Oklad with Brass Halos. ARTIST: Unknown artist of Russian Orthodox Iconography. SIZE: 8.9 " x 7.1" x 0.8" (22.5 x 18 x 2 cm.) WEIGHT : 357 grams CONDITION: This authentic antique icon is in an excellent state of preservation and has not been repainted or restored. The Oklad is silver plated and rubbed and attached to the panel with newer nails. The silver is original. The Brass Halo is attached with newer nails. The icon has never been restored and is in original condition. DESCRIPTION : This antique Russian Orthodox Icon depicts The Mother of God of Hodigitria (meaning "She who shows the "Way"... the "way" being Jesus Christ). T are several legends that surround this famous icon in which the Virgin directs the viewer's attention to her Son, while both figures face the viewer.
