This is an antique spring lancet or fleam, which is a bleeding instrument, with its originalleather case. My best guess as to its age is early to mid 19th century. It's made of brass, and measures 2 inches long. The back has a sliding cover which opens to reveal the springmechanism, which is in good working order. The steel spring has a blued finish. It works by pulling back the small, curved finger pull behind the blade until the blade catches. It is then activated with the release lever on the front, causing the blade to snap out into its original position, piercing the skin of whatever person or animal it's being used on. Anyway, it's in good condition, but I should mention that the small springs on these are fragile, and many of them are encountered with broken springs, which are near impossible to replace. Tfore it's not a good idea to play around with the mechanisms, and I cannot accept a return due to the buyer breaking the spring. The case is wood covered with leather, and measures 2 3/4 by 1 1/2 inches, and is in rough condition, the leather being tattered and brittle. It has the remnants of some lettering stamped in the top which is no longer readable, couldn't get it to show up on a picture - it looks like it might possibly be German but that is just a guess. Anyway shipping would be $8 within the US, by priority mail read more
