I have two of these scutching paddles up for auction this week, both of them picked up by a friend of mine visiting the island of Gotland off the swedish coast. These w used when preparing the flax fibers. From time to time one can find these with lovely painting on them with floral decorations and monograms and these painted ones w often suitors gifts to the bride to be showing how skilful he was. These painted and decorated w not used that often so for everyday use these undecorated w more common but these are now rare to find because they w considered cheap and w tfor thrown away when modern machines took over. This one is with a monogram and a very discreet handcarved decoration and all handcarved with a fantastic patina. It has been used so t is a bit of wear and a few wood worm holes. A charming piece of history. The length is 53 cm and the weight is 180 gram. Please take a look at the other one I have up for auction.
