This is a striking Tonalist oil on board gem signed G. Whitaker in the lower right. George Whitaker (1841-1916) was known as the "Dean of Providence Painters." His auction records exceed $6000.00. His close association with George Inness and Alexander Wyant is reflected in this painting, especially the work of Inness. The sky is beautiful and the painting is made more intriguing by the two figures in the lower center. The painting measures 4&1/4" by 6." Framed, it measures about 8&1/2" by 10." Condition is as shown. Please look at all photos to form your own opinion of quality and condition. I had the painting professionally cleaned as it was quite dirty when I purchased it. It sparkles now. The frame is what came with it - it is gold leaf, which may be a newer finish, perhaps leafed 20 or so years ago. The painting is in excellent condition. The frame has some losses, mostly on the left outer edge, as well as some minor but very stable corner separation. That being said, this package shows beautifully and in my estimation, is ready to hang. Whitaker was a fine painter with excellent auction results. This painting has an exceptional palette, making it both a Luminist and Tonalist composition. US ship only. Thanks for looking!
