You are invited to bid on this lovely salt glazed, drabware relief moulded ale jug, made by William Brownfield of Cobridge, Staffordshire in 1870. It has a pale grey body decorated in relief with scrolling and stylized flowers against a stippled ground. Above is a zigzag tooth and below a stylised acanthus leaf border. The jug has a stylish angular handle. The pattern is called 'Marne'. The jug would originally have had a hinged pewter lid, but this is missing, though the holes where it would have attached remain. The jug stands almost 6" tall. It bears the relief moulded backstamp for Brownfield, and the registration mark for 1870. It is in good condition with no cracks and just one small chip to the rim, by one of the holes for the lid. An attractive old piece.
